Cultural heritage

Xstrata Coal is committed to preserving local cultural heritage in the communities it impacts

Xstrata Coal recognises the importance of local indigenous and non-indigenous cultural heritage and is committed to working with local communities to protect and preserve this important history.

Technical studies undertaken for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) show there are no sites of indigenous or non-indigenous significance listed under current cultural heritage legislation that are likely to be affected by the Wandoan Coal Project.

While this is the case, we understand there are some local places or items that contribute to the local heritage of the area. For this reason, a Cultural Heritage Management Plan will be developed to assist in surveying work areas to identify and protect cultural heritage prior to any activities taking place.

Through Xstrata Coal's work with the local community, a number of initiatives have also been identified and will be implemented as part of the Project.

For more information, please read our fact sheet "We will work with you to manage and reduce impacts on roads, heritage and visual amenity".
