Applications for the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Coal Project Community Fund are open all year round

Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund

The Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund is a community donations and sponsorship program that was established to provide support to local communities in the areas of health, education, environment, social and community development, enterprise and job creation, and the arts. Since 2009, the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund has contributed over $270,000 to community groups to support community initiatives in the areas of Wandoan, Miles and Taroom.

This program highlights Xstrata Coal’s commitment to supporting the local communities in which it operates.

Donations made in 2009 and 2010

Since 2009, the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund provided funding to more than 35 local community organisations to support key community initiatives and events including:

2009:

  • Wandoan Show Society for the Wandoan Show
  • Wandoan Bowls Club for a patio extension at the club
  • Wandoan Kindergarten for painting their building inside and out
  • Wandoan State School for the annual Year 7 and Year 8 Camp
  • Apex Club to install a gas BBQ in Apex Park
  • Queensland Council of Carers for the Family Fun Day

2010:

  • Gurulmundi School of Arts Hall Association for an exterior walls painting project
  • Lions Club of Taroom for sponsorship of the Annual Goose Club
  • St Mary's P&F Association for sponsorship of the Rodeo and equipment
  • Taroom State School for sponsorship of the Home Reading Program
  • Wandoan Gymnastics Club for training and end of year gifts and awards
  • Wandoan Tennis Club for a two day coaching clinic.

2011:

  • Dawson Jockey Club for Gate sponsorship
  • Grosmont State School for sponsorship for the School Camp 3-7
  • Miles and District Football Club for sponsorship for the purchase of an urn
  • Taroom Wandoan Cricket Club for sponsorship for equipment
  • Wandoan Arts Council sponsorship for the Wandoan Beautification project
  • Wandoan Chamber of Commerce for sponsorship for the community website.

Xstrata Coal's Corporate Social Involvement Program

In addition to the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund, Xstrata Coal’s Corporate Social Involvement program has established several key partnerships to support education and health initiatives in the Wandoan Coal Project area.

Wandoan Education Partnership

The Xstrata Coal QMEA Wandoan Education Partnership between Xstrata Coal, Queensland Department of Education and the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy will provide $720,000 funding for equipment, curricula enrichment and school-industry liaison to Wandoan and Taroom State Schools and Miles High School. Wandoan Health Partnership

The Xstrata Coal Wandoan Health Partnership between Xstrata Coal and Queensland Health will provide $750,000 for Wandoan Outpatients Clinic capital works with the aim of delivering improved primary healthcare services to the Wandoan township. This partnership will provide improved infrastructure from which to deliver community and clinical services and retention of dedicated, qualified nursing staff.
